About Tommy Nguyen

Born in California Disneyland adjacent, Tommy is an artist currently based in Brooklyn whittling Vietnamese Water Puppets for the dramaturgy of his mother's immigrant play while editing and creating queer glam rock videos with partner opera director Doug Fitch, polymath.

He holds a philosophy degree from St. Thomas University at the Thomistic Center with a focus on economics. He earned a second bachelors from the University of Buffalo, this time a BA in Studio Art with the honor of being awarded the Eugene Gaier award in Drawing. He further continued his studies starting a third masters program at the University of Buffalo, finishing an MFA with the thesis show ME PLUSH YOU LONG TIME.

He has had residencies in Iceland, Finland, Denmark, and Germany and has exhibited internationally. He moved to New York to be an artist at Flux Factory where the principles of parades, karaoke, Beyonce, and food deeply remain in his queer techno orientalist practice. Next year, thanks to an NEA grant, he brings to Buffalo with the extraordinary work of curator Shirley Verrico and director Alma Carillo his show NEW GODS OLD AMERICA, where he brings to Buffalo a project that started at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens nascent gods who may offer us a better future.
